Before you touch a single wire, gather the parts that match your dish generation. Starlink hardware has changed over the years, and the wrong adapter will not work no matter how carefully you wire it.
Polarity is the single most common way a 12V Starlink install goes wrong. Reversing positive and negative, even for a fraction of a second, can permanently damage the dish's internal board. Always confirm the centre-pin polarity of your adapter against the label on the original power supply before connecting anything. Voltage matters just as much — some Starlink models expect a regulated 12V, while others are happier with a wider DC range, so check the sticker on your factory power brick and match it exactly rather than guessing.
Take your time here. A methodical approach is the difference between a reliable off-grid link and a fried dish.
An inline fuse is never optional in a 12V build. A short on a battery bank can deliver hundreds of amps in an instant, and a fuse is the only thing standing between a pinched cable and a fire. Choose a fuse rated a little above the dish's normal draw — roughly 5A for the Mini and 8A to 10A for the larger dishes — and mount it as close to the battery as physically possible. Use marine-grade or automotive cable with enough cross-section for the full cable run, because undersized wire drops voltage and forces the dish to reboot under load.
Once everything is connected, power up and open the Starlink app to confirm the dish boots and reaches an online state. With the dish actively running, measure the voltage at the connector — if it sags well below the rated level, your cable is too thin or the supply cannot hold its output. Let the system run for an hour under real load before you trust it in the field, and re-check the fuse and connections for any sign of heat.
